Last year, participants hunted for candy-filled eggs as well as a special golden egg that contained a savings bond. The egg hunt will take place in the Keehner Park tennis court area. Keehner Park is located at 7211 Barrett Road.

Liberty Township egg hunt – Like West Chester, the Liberty Township Easter egg hunt will take place Saturday. The Liberty Township event will begin at 10 a.m. at Liberty Park, 6757 Yankee Road. The egg hunt will be broken down into four age groups (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8). Each group will hunt for about 5-to-10 minutes before set up begins for the next group. The order will go from youngest to oldest. The first egg hunt will start at 10 a.m. and the last egg hunt is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Children may bring a basket, bag or other contained to collect the eggs. Bill Dreisbach becomes Lakota’s all-time leader in wins

April 5, 2012 - 11:08am

Lakota West head coach Bill Dreisbach turns in the lineup card before a game against rival Lakota East April 21, 2011. Photo taken by Adam Kiefaber.

Lakota West head coach Bill Dreisbach, who is in his 15th year, became the school district’s all-time leader in wins Wednesday when the Firebirds won at Colerain by the score of 13-2.

Dreisbach, who now has 269 career wins, surpassed former Lakota and Lakota East head coach Jim Rouff, who coached in the district 19 seasons and was recently inducted into the Lakota Hall of Fame.

“I want to be sure to give my respect and thanks to Jim Rouff. I would not be in the district if not for him,” Dreisbach said. “I met him when we both were working for the Reds in the early-to-mid 90’s. He told me of a great opportunity in a growing district. I volunteered to be his assistant in 1997 with the last edition of the old Lakota High School, and was fortunate enough to be hired as West’s first coach the next season.”

Lakota West headl coach Bill Dreisbach talks to the young sluggers at the Best in the West Firebird Baseball Camp June 28, 2011. Photo taken by Tony Jones.

Third on the list, is the current active head coach at Lakota East – Ray Hamilton, who has 181 career wins.

All-time win leaders in Lakota baseball history:

  1. 269 Bill Dreisbach (coach at Lakota West, 15 seasons)
  2. 268 Jim Rouff (coached at Lakota and Lakota East, 19 seasons)
  3. 181 Ray Hamilton (coach at Lakota East, 13 seasons)
  4. 122 Dick West (coached at Lakota, nine seasons)
  5. 69 Jim Hartman (coached at Lakota, eight seasons)
  6. 21 Ed Crain (coached at Lakota, two seasons)

During Dreisbach’s tenure at West, the Firebirds have one a state championship (2007), two city championships (2008, 2009), six district championships (2001, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011), four Greater Miami Conference titles (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and have been ranked nationally in two different seasons (2007, 2008) with the highest being No. 6 in June of 2008.

“I have certainly enjoyed the ride,” Dreisbach said. “From day one I have always given credit to those who deserve it the most – the players. To date, I have yet to personally score a run, get a hit or record a strikeout, but I have had a great seat in watching Lakota West win many big games and championships over the years.”

April 4, 2012 - 4:07pm

The Voice of America Chorus has announced that it will once again participate in the Sweet Adeline Region 4 Competition at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington April 20-21.

Last year the group captured first place in the small chorus division and fourth place in the “a capella” singing contest.

“We felt that was pretty good for our first time out”, said Traci Martin, Voice of America Chorus director. “Thanks to a successful membership drive in January, we have suddenly grown to a mid-sized chorus and look forward to competing in this new category.”

Competition sessions are open to the public. Tickets are available on the day of the competition at the NKCC box office for $30 each session (students, $15). For contest information, call 513-554-2648 or visit www.sai-region4.org.

Local library system to change name and logo Monday

April 4, 2012 - 2:53pm

National Library Week, April 8-14, will coincide with a name change to the Middletown Public Library System. As of Monday, the local library system will officially be known as the MidPointe Library System.

According to the library’s public relations manager Cari Hillman, the name change has been in the works for a number years due to the reasoning that the library’s previous name didn’t reflect its entire service area.

All three branches, Middletown, Trenton and West Chester, will have activities planned around the name change and to celebrate National Library Week.

In West Chester, the library will hold an unveiling ceremony Monday at 9 a.m. All community members are invited to attend the event and be among the first to receive a new MidPointe Library System card.

Furthermore, all patrons who visit any branch of the MidPointe Library System next week, from April 9-14, to either “trade in” their old card or apply for a new library card will be entered to win a Kindle Fire. A winner from each branch will be selected at random.

The library will also give gifts to any child who participates in a library program next week.

Next Saturday, April 14, Tom Sparough, the “Space Painter” will bring his juggling, story-telling antics to the West Chester branch for a performance at 10 a.m. in the community room. To register, call 513-777-3131 ext. 2 or visit the youth services desk at the library.

In other news, all branches of the library will be closed on Easter Sunday.

For future library events, visit the West Chester Library events page on WestChesterBuzz.com or visit the library’s online community calendar.

FairTax to be topic at next Lib. Twp. Tea Party meeting

April 3, 2012 - 1:47pm

The FairTax will be the topic at the Liberty Township Tea Party meeting next Tuesday, April 9, at VanGorden Elementary School, 6476 LeSourdsville-West Chester Road, at 7 p.m.

Steve Curtis, who is director of FairTax Ohio, will be the speaker.

According to information on ohfairtax.org, the FairTax would repeal the federal income and payroll taxes and replace them with a retail sales tax on all new goods and services.

Curtis writes on how FairTax would work:

Simply put, we’d pay our taxes when we buy new goods or use common services. If we buy a new car, we pay taxes. If we buy a used car… no federal taxes at all. If we buy a used home, we’d pay no taxes on the home, but we’d pay taxes on the services of the real estate agent who helped with the purchase. More importantly, we’d have our whole paycheck with which to make those purchases. For most of us, that would be a 40 percent raise right off the bat.

Meanwhile, Tea Party member Ken Korn will present “Four Minutes with Our Forefathers,” an ongoing series that examines the United States Constitution, how it was written and why it is important.

For information about the Liberty Township Tea Party, visit www.libertytownshipteaparty.org.

MetroParks asking residents to re-use hang tags

April 3, 2012 - 11:37am

Residents of Butler County will again be able to bring motor vehicles into MetroParks at no charge for 2012. MetroParks began giving free permits to county residents after narrowly passing a levy in November of 2010.

Butler Count residents, who received an annual hang tag in 2011, are being asked to hold on to their tags for the new year. Upon completion of a brief form and proof of residency, they will receive an orange sticker to be placed on top of the old permit to update their tag.

If residents have misplaced their old hang tags or did not receive one in the previous year, they can still fill out a brief form and provide proof of residency to receive a tag at no charge for 2012.

Currently, stickers or tags for 2012 are available at the MetroParks administrative offices in Ross Township just outside of Hamilton on from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the Voice of America baitshop, which is open daily.

Permits can also be obtained at any park booth when staffed at Voice of America MetroPark, Sebald Park and Rentschler Forest MetroPark.

Partner distribution locations will include:

  • Butler County Visitors Bureau in West Chester
  • Middletown Libraries in West Chester and Trenton
  • Morgan Township administrative offices
  • The Fairfield Arts Center
  • The Lane Public Libraries in Oxford, Hamilton and Fairfield

Hours for these locations vary so please consult the location for their normal business hours.

Non-residents can also still support MetroParks by purchasing motor vehicle permits at the same prices as last year-$10/annual or $5/daily permit. More information can be found on the website at www.YourMetroParks.net or by calling 513-867-5835.

Hamilton and Butler partnership - Residents of Butler County are now be able to purchase an annual motor vehicle permit for the Hamilton County Park District at select MetroPark locations thanks to a recently formed partnership between the two park systems. The $10 permits for HCPD can now be purchased at the administrative offices just west of Hamilton or at the Voice of America MetroPark baitshop in West Chester during normal business hours. Meanwhile, Hamilton County residents are also able to purchase annual permits for MetroParks of Butler County for $10 at its Winton Woods office and at the Sharon Woods Visitor Center.

MetroParks names official bird through ‘Decision 2012’

April 3, 2012 - 9:56am

West Chester Trustee George Lang votes for his favorite bird in MetroParks of Butler County’s "Decision 2012" on Election Day Nov. 8, 2011. Photo taken by Adam Kiefaber.

MetroParks of Butler County recently completed its “Decision 2012,” a voting contest that designated a native Ohio bird species as the official bird of the park system.

More than 1,800 votes were cast during the voting period, which began on Election Day in November and ended just prior to the beginning of March.

Great Blue Heron. Photo provided.

Winning the contest was the Great Blue Heron, which came out on top with 33 percent of the vote. Candidates also included the Eastern Screech Owl, Pileated Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal and Wild Turkey. Writing in a candidate was also an option.

Finishing in second place was write-in candidate, the Prothonatory Warbler, with 21 percent of the vote. That was followed by the Northern Cardinal with 13 percent, the Eastern Screech Owl and Wild Turkey with 11 percent and then by the Pileated Woodpecker with 10 percent along with other write-in candidates.

“While you probably didn’t see any campaign signs, this program served as a fun opportunity for parents to talk with their children about the election process, how they can participate and how they can affect the outcome by getting involved,” said Lynette Dean, MetroParks program and special events supervisor. “This program also served as an educational tool for parents and children to learn about some of the native bird species.”

Dean also said that with the success of the election, MetroParks is anticipating holding other elections in the future to designate other official species of the park system.

Mason sweeps Lakota school district with a 4-2 victory

April 2, 2012 - 7:56pm

The Mason Comets completed a four-game sweep against Lakota high school baseball teams with a 4-2 victory at Mason Middle School Monday.

Overall, the Mason batters struggled to make contact against Lakota East senior ace Michael Conrad, but got a big hit when it mattered.

In the bottom of the third inning, University of Cincinnati signee Conrad loaded the bases with a wild pitch on a strikeout, hit a batter and allowed another batter to reach on a fielder’s choice.

Then, with one out, Mason junior third baseman Drew Johnson got the Comets’ first hit of the game when he pulled a Conrad fastball down the third baseline for a 2-RBI single.

“Conrad was blowing some serious cheese. I just got a pitch in the zone and I was to get a soft grounder down the third baseline. It really got the team going and pumped up,” Johnson said. “Andrew McDonald then shut it down.”

After laboring through the first two innings, walking two and hitting two other batters, McDonald settled down, striking out seven batters and allowing two hits in six innings.

One of those hits was a solo home run by senior center fielder Alex Corna, which cleared the 345-foot marker in right-center field.

Mason shortstop Marcus Otte celebrates during a 6-2 win against Lakota East. Photo by Tony Tribble.

“It was an outstanding performance for him (McDonald). To do that against a ballclub like that, the defending state champions regardless of where they are now, is impressive,” Mason head coach Ken Gray said. “He just threw a heck of ballgame today.”

The Comets added a pair of insurance runs. One more in the third on an errant throw to the pitcher and another run on an error on a ground ball to the second baseman in the fourth.

Meanwhile, in a losing effort, Conrad also pitched well for the Thunderhawks, finishing the game by striking out 10 batters and allowing only two hits in five innings of work.

“When you strike out 10 and give up two hits that should be good enough for the win,” Lakota East head coach Ray Hamilton said. “He was good enough last Monday, when gave up four hits and struck out 12. When do that, you should win. Right now, we are not.”

The defending state champs are not winning and also lost Conrad’s last outing by the score of 4-2 against Hamilton March 26. Overall, the Thunderhawks are 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the Greater Miami Conference.

“This is the GMC. I don’t care who you play for, you have to have good at-bats,” Hamilton said. “There is real good pitching in this league and that will never change. Mason is a really good team, so hopefully we can learn from this, get better from this and not make the same mistakes we made today.”

The Comets, on the other hand, behind a deep pitching staff are off to 6-2 start and improve to 4-0 in the GMC.

“It has been a blast so far. We have a great team and we think that we can make a run at the GMC and maybe advance further later on in the season,” Johnson said.

BOX: W–McDonald (2-0, 7 K’s); Conrad (0-1, 10 K’s). Leaders M-Johnson 2 RBI. LE-Corna HR. M 6-2, 4-0 GMC. LE 2-4, 1-3 GMC.
